FLORHAM PARK — The Jets have a tough decision to make over the next two weeks.
Their star running back Le’Veon Bell hasn’t played in a game in more than 18 months, and he could probably benefit from some live action with the first-team offense before the season begins against the Bills next month.
But Bell has taken a lot of punishment in his career, and he’s likely going to take a lot more this year as the Jets’ prime offensive weapon. So playing him at all in meaningless preseason may not be worth the risk, especially considering the Jets’ recent bad luck with injuries.
Monday, coach Adam Gase said he still hasn’t decided what to do with Bell this preseason. But whatever is decided, it will be with the start of the regular season in mind.
“I want him to be good for Week 1,” Gase said. “So if that’s something where he feels like, ‘Hey, I need to get a series in. I need to get some snaps, I need to get some carries, I need to get some routes,’ then we’ll do…
