Serena Williams entered Sunday with a chance to win her first tournament since giving birth to her first child almost two years ago. That wait will continue after she retired early in the first set of the Rogers Cup final against Bianca Andreescu with an upper-back injury.
Williams, who reached the Wimbledon final last month, was complaining of back spasms prior to bowing out. Andreescu, 19, broke her serve in the first set and held a 3-1 advantage before the match was called.
In a display of sportsmanship, Andreescu comforted an emotional Williams and gave her a hug while the crowd cheered its appreciation of the moment.
